Media Release: Extension of appointments of Supreme Court Judges

The President of the Republic of Singapore, in accordance with Article 95(2) of the Constitution, has extended the appointments of Justice Belinda Ang as Judge of the Appellate Division for a further three-year term, and Justice Tan Siong Thye as Judge of the High Court for a further two-year term.

Extension of appointment of Justice Belinda Ang as Judge of the Appellate Division

3 Justice Belinda Ang was appointed Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Singapore on 1 February 2002 and elevated to Judge of the High Court on 2 January 2003. Since 30 July 2018, Justice Ang has been sitting regularly in the Court of Appeal. She retired on 23 April 2019 at the age of 65 and was re-appointed as Judge of the High Court on24 April 2019. With the establishment of the Appellate Division of the High Court on 2 January 2021, Justice Ang was appointed Judge of the Appellate Division from 2 January 2021 to 23 April 2021, and was concurrently appointed as its President.

4 Justice Ang’s areas of focus are in Shipping and Arbitration matters, Finance, Securities, Banking, and Complex Commercial cases.

Extension of appointment of Justice Tan Siong Thye as Judge of the High Court

5 Justice Tan Siong Thye was appointed Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Singapore on 1 October 2013 and elevated to Judge of the High Court on 1 July 2014. He was subsequently appointed Singapore’s first Deputy Attorney-General in February 2015 before returning to the Bench as a High Court Judge on 1 April 2017. Justice Tan retired on 21 June 2019 at the age of 65 and was re-appointed as Judge of the High Court on 22 June 2019. His current tenure ends on 21 June 2021.

6 Justice Tan’s areas of focus include technical factual disputes including construction, as well as criminal matters, and cases concerning company law and tort claims.

7 With the above extension of appointments, the Supreme Court will have a total of 26 Judges (including Chief Justice and four Justices of the Court of Appeal), four Judicial Commissioners, three Senior Judges and 16 International Judges.
